Medicines called back with fenugreek seedsBecause of potential contamination with EHEC, the Federal Institute for Drugs now attracts medicines containing the Egyptian fenugreek seeds, out of circulation.

After the import ban on Egyptian sprout seeds now certain medicines drew the attention of the EHEC-investigators. This was announced by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Bonn on Friday. The provincial authorities had been asked to take drugs and active ingredients from the market if they contain fenugreek seeds, which had been imported from Egypt, from 2009-2011.

The European Union (EU) decided earlier this week, no import to the end of October sprout seeds, soybeans and oil seeds to more out of Egypt. Previously, the European authorities had identified a supply of 15 tonnes of fenugreek seeds in Egypt as a cause of EHEC epidemic, which resulted in Germany alone, thousands of people became ill and at least 51 died.
Seed supply also went to France
The contaminated seeds to sprout breeding went accordingly to middlemen at a plant in Lower Saxony Bienenbüttel, considered as a starting point for the EHEC disease in Germany. The batch produced in 2009 was shipped to France, where sick people well. Crushed fenugreek seeds is used inter alia as an herbal digestive medicine.
